Watch 13 departures of US Air Force B1 bombers from RAF Fairford in England during their deployment on Operation Epic Fury, both for missions in the Middle East and training exercises. The ground-shaking bombers ignite four afterburners as part of their take off process, creating an incredibly bright streak in lower lighting. The sound is phenomenal in person. It is owned by the UK government but leased to the US military for their operations. Permission was given for the base to be used by a forward deployment of bombers on Operation Epic Fury in the Middle East. There are at least 12 bombers now deployed to the United Kingdom. The Rockwell B-1B Lancers ('BONE') are operated by the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, and the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess AFB in Texas. There are currently no B-52 Stratofortresses ('BUFF') bombers on base, but you may see them in this footage from earlier in the deployment. Production of the B-1A began in 1973 with the program being cancelled a short time later. The program was then restarted in the 1980s with the B-1B entering production in 1983, and operational capability in 1986.
