India Begins Passenger Service on Its First EVER Hydrogen-Powered Train! Creates History! India has officially entered the era of hydrogen-powered rail transport with the launch of its first hydrogen fuel cell passenger train, marking a major milestone in the country's push for cleaner and more sustainable transportation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train on the Jind–Sonipat section in Haryana, making India one of the few countries to introduce hydrogen-powered passenger rail services. The project is part of Indian Railways' broader effort to reduce dependence on diesel and promote green mobility. Unlike conventional diesel trains, a hydrogen train generates electricity onboard using hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen reacts with oxygen inside the fuel cell to produce electricity, which powers the train's motors. The only direct by-products of this process are water and heat, making the technology virtually emission-free during operation. The train also uses batteries to store surplus energy, improving efficiency during acceleration and braking. The 10-coach train has been designed and developed in India and is expected to carry around 2,500 passengers. It operates on a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, making it one of the most powerful hydrogen-powered passenger trains currently in service. Officials say the pilot route in Haryana will help evaluate the technology before considering its deployment on other non-electrified railway sections across the country. Hydrogen-powered trains are viewed as an important alternative where full railway electrification is difficult or expensive.
