Italian court blocks Lee Gilley's extradition for now over death penalty concerns

Italy pauses sending Lee Gilley back to Texas — and it comes down to punishment. 🇮🇹⚖️ Italian judges want the U.S. to guarantee he won’t face the death penalty if convicted, and the court is also raising concerns about life without parole. Court records cite an email from Harris County prosecutor Janna Oswald declining to file anything official waiving the death penalty — and Italy appears to indicate without a clear waiver, extradition can’t move forward. The U.S. has until Aug. 31 to respond. Next hearing: early September. After that, Italy decides: extradite him… or deny it — which could mean he’s released in Italy.
