Is Valentine’s Day permissible in Islam?

From the perspective of many scholars, several main reasons are given for considering it impermissible: 1. Non-Islamic origin It is said to have roots in Christian and Western traditions (often linked to Saint Valentine) and has no basis in early Islamic teachings. Based on the hadith, “Whoever imitates a people is one of them,” some scholars argue that imitating the religious symbols or celebrations of other faiths is not allowed. 2. Innovation (Bid‘ah) Since such a celebration did not exist during the time of the Prophet Muhammad or his companions, introducing a new religious festival is considered an innovation in religion. 3. Moral concerns Some believe the day may encourage relationships outside Islamic boundaries, inappropriate mixing, or the promotion of values that conflict with modesty and Islamic guidelines. However, there is not complete agreement. Some scholars argue that if: • the intention is simply to express love to one’s spouse, • no non-Islamic religious belief is involved, and • no sinful act takes place, then expressing love itself is not forbidden. In fact, showing affection between husband and wife is encouraged in Islam. In short: there is a difference of opinion. Those who consider it haram focus on imitation and religious innovation, while those who consider it permissible focus on intention and practice rather than the name of the day.
