Huge News New Gorillas Shanga And Aarde Make Debut At Twycross Zoo

🦍🌿*Huge news as gorilla Shanga and her cheeky four year old son Aarde make their big debut at Twycross Zoo, touching real grass for the very first time. Their former home was Chessington World of Adventure.* It is the news we have all been waiting for. Gorilla Shanga and her four year old son Aarde have officially joined the gorilla troop at Twycross Zoo. Now that it has been officially announced, I can finally release this first video to you all. Little Aarde was outside with Shufai first thing in the morning. Shufai went straight into his stiffened pose, but little Aarde is definitely not easily intimidated. He has grown up with older siblings, so he is well used to some boisterous behaviour. I actually filmed Aarde when he was just a year old at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, so it is incredible to see him again. I have put some links down below for you to check out that old footage. This moment is incredibly special because it is Shanga and her son's first time ever feeling real grass under their feet. They did not have this at Chessington Zoo, so I really wonder what they thought of all that green grass. The brilliant keepers actually left the grass a bit longer for them to experience it properly, which is also fantastic for hiding enrichment. From the short time I have seen them, I really think Aarde will get on well with Shufai. The introductions are still very much ongoing, and as far as I know, Ozala and Oumbi are mostly separated for now while the staff work tirelessly towards getting the whole troop together. This process can take quite a while, and because of this, the inside gorilla house is currently shut to visitors. Shanga came out quickly, but she still seems very skittish and tried getting her son inside. She grabbed Aarde by the arm to take him back inside with her, but little Aarde was quite happy outdoors and didn't move, preferring to tuck into some food instead. So, Shanga decided to head back inside by herself. Unfortunately, I had to cut some of that footage because it was just too shaky to watch. It was all just so exciting to see them outside and I honestly did not think they would venture out this quickly. Aarde really made me laugh when he tried to figure out the heavy door flap, but I was so proud of him when he worked it out and got himself inside. They also did not have such a great climbing feature at their old place, so I cannot wait until they test it all out properly. On the whole, Shufai seems absolutely OK with Aarde. You can see in the video that they were quite close together already. I believe Shufai's behaviour was more about the entire change rather than just Aarde himself. It is a massive amount to take in, with his mum and dad locked in the back separated so these crucial introductions can happen safely.
