Ever wonder why engineers make stupid decisions when it comes to automotive parts and repair? Well, those decisions are often not theirs and often made a compromise from a multitude of factors. I'm a mechanical engineer and lets have a discussion why! There are many factors that contribute to a product design, including the budget, product lifecycle, customer habits, warranty period, safety regulations, emissions, fuel economy, environment, political factors, packaging, manufacturing and design envelope. In this video I'll discuss (and try to justify) reasons engineers make decisions that seemingly tick you off and make fists when working on your car. Disposable plastic valve covers? Thermostat housings that magically break after the warranty is up? The ultimate reason might surprise you...automakers are ultimately a business and engineers are being held wrongfully liable for this mess.
