Willow Ptarmigan - Bizarre calls & sounds

The sounds of a Willow Ptarmigan making its comical, barking calls, recorded in the wild in Sweden. Also known as the Willow Grouse, this species makes a range of raspy cackles and barks. The "go-back, go-back, go-back" call is often given by males defending their territory. These calls are a familiar sound of tundra, moorland and willow scrub across the far north. Willow Ptarmigan calls have gone viral on TikTok and other platforms where the bird has picked up the nickname the 'awebo' bird. The Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) is closely related to the Red Grouse of the British Isles, which is sometimes classified as a subspecies of Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) rather than a separate species.
