YPPYouTube Partner Program

The YouTube Partner Program — YPP — is the gateway to monetization. Joining unlocks ad revenue on long-form video, Shorts ad revenue share, YouTube Premium revenue share, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, and access to the merch shelf. There are two qualification paths: the long-form path (1,000 subscribers + 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months) and the Shorts path (1,000 subscribers + 10M valid Shorts views in the last 90 days).

Quick definition

YPP (YouTube Partner Program) is the monetization program creators join to earn money from ads, Premium revenue, channel memberships, and Super Chat on YouTube.

Why YPP matters for YouTube creators

YPP is the single most important threshold for a creator's economics. Pre-YPP channels rely on sponsorships, affiliate revenue, and brand deals; post-YPP, ad and Premium revenue become a steady (if often modest) income stream that pays even when sponsors are quiet. The qualification criteria also shape strategy: aiming for the Shorts path biases the channel toward viral short-form, while the long-form path encourages longer, retention-heavy uploads. Most channels qualify through the long-form path because 4,000 hours is more achievable than 10M Shorts views.

How YPP works

Eligibility is monitored continuously. Once you cross the threshold YouTube notifies you via Studio and email. You then complete the application: enable two-step verification, link AdSense, agree to the Partner Program terms, and pass a content review. Reviews typically take a few days to a few weeks. Channels approved into YPP can lose status if they violate community guidelines or accumulate strikes.

YPP in practice

A history-channel creator hits 1,200 subscribers and 4,100 watch hours after 14 months and is accepted into YPP within 10 days; ad revenue begins appearing in AdSense by the next monthly payout cycle.

A creator scaling on Shorts hits 1,000 subscribers within 60 days and then 10M Shorts views in the next 30 — qualifying via the Shorts path and entering YPP at month four.

Frequently asked questions

How many subscribers do I need to join YPP?
1,000 subscribers is the floor, regardless of which path you choose. After 1,000 you also need either 4,000 long-form public watch hours in the last 12 months OR 10M Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Can a channel lose YPP status?
Yes. Strikes, repeated community guidelines violations, or 6 months of channel inactivity can trigger YPP review or removal. Reapplication is allowed after the issue is resolved.
Does YPP guarantee ads on every video?
No. Each video must also pass advertiser-friendly review. A video that's YPP-eligible can still be limited or demonetized for individual content choices (profanity, controversial topics, copyrighted music, etc.).
