Deformed fishes caught in Thailand’s Kok River have raised fears of dangerous pollution, and villagers have reported unusual skin ailments after coming into contact with the water. Thai researchers have found toxic traces that may be linked to illegal rare earth mining operations upstream in Myanmar. The Kok feeds into the Mekong, Asia’s third-largest river, whose farm and fisheries products reach supermarkets worldwide, including in the US and Singapore. Thai authorities have since warned farmers to stop using the river water.
