It Doesn't Biodegrade: Cutting a Permanent Trap Off a Seal

Dramatic scenes played out at Pelican Point today. The truth is, our rescue efforts have been a massive struggle. Despite a heartbreakingly healthy and thriving seal colony and record highs in ocean plastic rubbish, we are finding it harder to match our rescue numbers from previous years. We are fighting extra hard for each and every entangled seal we can lay our hands on. We don't even know what type of commercial net or line this bright green mesh originally was. But it doesn't matter. It was actively killing this seal, and it had to be removed from his neck and taken out of the marine ecosystem permanently. This is pure synthetic plastic. There is zero biodegrading happening here. If we hadn't stepped in today, this trap would have stayed in the ocean for centuries to come, outliving the very animals it was destined to destroy. It was only a matter of time before a marine animal stumbled into it.
