Snow" Patrol - Day 10: The path ahead ~ Great Lakes Bald EagleCam A quick message from our founders: "We were tasked with keeping this message brief, so we will just say that the generosity and support that this passionate community has shown over the previous week has meant daily runs to the PO Box to pick up car loads of donated supplies. It has enabled us to purchase life saving medical equipment - our own x-ray machine and lead testing supplies - that will result in higher quality care for ALL patients. And, it has improved our capacity to carry out our mission thoughtfully and sustainably. For this, please accept our most heartfelt gratitude to all who have followed along with Snow's story, messaged or commented in a show of support for our incredibly dedicated and talented team, or contributed (in whatever capacity you were able) towards our mission. It is truly an honor to work with these incredible creatures, and it is made all the more meaningful to have you sharing the journey with us." On to the update... (The posted video - with the middle portion sped up to 2x regular speed - shows Snow opting to self-feed during breakfast. This is positive behavior from a recovery standpoint, as well as being preferable, as it allows us to limit unnecessary human contact.) When a patient is admitted, the priority for the medical team is to deliver life saving care first, and then progress that patient down a treatment path that provides the highest likelihood for recovery, while also limiting their time in care. Snow's condition through Friday remains largely unchanged and, for now, the current course of care will continue as healing progresses. This also means that we have begun to shift our focus over to defining what the path forward can look like for him. In the case of eagles, that process typically follows a relatively set route: -We compile the data points, timetable for treatment, any long-term care requirements/complications that may exist, and account for the unique circumstances of each patient. -We then review these findings with the veterinarian and collaborating care partners (in this case, the incredible staff at A.R.K. / Association to Rescue Kritters), while factoring in outside resources that may be well positioned to assist in providing the best outcome (other rehabilitators with eagles on-site, banders, tree climbers, tribal partners, land owners with active nests, etc). -And finally, we lay out options that we believe will provide the highest QUALITY OF LIFE for the bird long-term. IF the result is that the bird is non-releaseable, we then present the suggested course of action to the Michigan D.N.R. and U.S. Fish and Wildlife for the final determination on disposition. Regarding Snow's case, this process will likely occur over the coming week as his treatment progresses. Snow is a warrior eaglet who has already beat defying odds of survival with the nest collapse and now is getting breathing treatments to add in fighting off any respiratory illness from the likelihood of having either pneumonia or aspergillosis.
