The Truth About Spiritual Blindness: I Once Was Blind But Now I See | John 9

In this inspiring and heartfelt sermon, we journey through John chapter 9 — the powerful story of the man born blind whom Jesus heals. Preacher Wayne Philips relates his humorous childhood memory of his interrupting a service to point out a lady’s blindness, to the profound miracle of Jesus making clay with spit and opening blind eyes, this message calls us to examine our own spiritual blindness. “I once was blind, but now I see.” Sermon Highlights: Blindness: Do you recognise it? Jesus does. Jesus sees what others overlook. The disciples ask whose sin caused the man’s blindness, but Jesus declares it happened so “the works of God should be made manifest in him.” We are all born spiritually blind — in darkness — until Christ, the Light of the World, opens our eyes. Jesus works the works. Jesus doesn’t just speak; He acts. He spits on the ground, makes clay, anoints the man’s eyes, and sends him to wash in the Pool of Siloam (“Sent”). A beautiful picture of new creation, echoing Genesis 2:7 when God formed man from the dust. Jesus still works today to remove our spiritual blindness. When Jesus heals your blindness, others will notice. Neighbours debate if it’s really the same man. The healed man boldly testifies before skeptical Pharisees: “One thing I know: that whereas I was blind, now I see.” Even his parents tread carefully out of fear. True transformation is undeniable. Jesus gives sight. After being cast out for his faith, Jesus finds the man and asks, “Dost thou believe on the Son of God?” The man’s response: “Lord, I believe,” and he worships Him. Jesus declares He came so that those who do not see might see, and those who think they see might be made blind. This message beautifully prepares hearts for the Lord’s Table, reminding us that the blood of Jesus was shed for blind sinners. As we remember His sacrifice, the question remains: Are you still blind, or do you believe? Personal Story: The preacher shares a touching childhood moment in the Strathalbyn Church of Christ and highlights the courage of modern-day testimonies, including blind water-skier Ben Pentingill, who lost his sight at 16 yet inspires others with his friend Matt (together known as “Blind and Legless”). Bible Passage (John 9) Full chapter read in the sermon — a complete, dramatic story of miracle, confrontation, faith, and worship.
