I started in Skid Row — a 50-block stretch of downtown LA with its own rules, its own economy, and its own unofficial mayor. I spoke to the self-proclaimed Mayor of Skid Row, a woman who feeds people every day, and a former dealer who now helps people get off the streets. It's one of the most lawless places I've ever walked through. From there I drove into the Sonoran Desert to Slab City — the so-called "last free place in America." Built on the concrete slabs of an abandoned World War II Marine base near the Salton Sea, it's one of the most extreme alternative living communities on earth. The people who live there have walked away from society by choice. I met Tomahawk, who carries a knife on her hip and draws portraits for strangers. I met Vampire Wayne. You'll just have to watch that part. Then, in the same week, I ended up in the Bay Area with San Jose rapper Big Tone — and I genuinely could not believe it was the same state. California in 2025 is one of the most talked-about places in the world. The reality on the ground still feels like a different planet even as a $2 billion redevelopment project gets approved for the edge of Skid Row and housing towers go up across downtown Los Angeles. Slab City is getting more attention than ever as more people ask whether off-grid living represents real freedom or just a different kind of trap. I went to find out for myself.
