Japanese Meets Scandinavian Design In This Stunning Small Home

In this week’s episode, we visit a breathtaking small home where Japanese and Scandinavian design come together to create a truly spectacular family home, filled with natural materials, clever ideas and a beautiful connection to nature. Built by Kellie and Jerrad (Kel and Jez), a couple with years of experience in sustainable building, this stunning 58m² small home is a masterclass in simple, brilliantly executed design. From the outside, the home sits beautifully within its landscape, wrapped in gorgeous timber and surrounded by gardens, mountain views and open sky. Inside, the home glows with Baltic pine across the floors, walls, ceilings, cabinetry and hidden doors, creating a space that feels warm, cohesive, handcrafted and full of soul. Kellie and Jerrad have had quite the journey to get to this home. After years of travelling and living in a tiny house while working on natural building projects around Australia, they found a wonderful affordable piece of land and settled down to build a place for themselves. They sold their tiny home to help fund the project, then lived in a shipping container on site with their two children and two dogs while building. And the resulting home really does speak for itself. This is not a large house, but it holds so much. There is a generous kitchen, a cosy family lounge, two beautiful bedrooms, clever storage, hidden doors, a wraparound deck, a private balcony, established gardens and a wonderful flow between indoors and out. The design takes inspiration from both Japanese and Scandinavian architecture, blending simplicity, warmth, natural materials and thoughtful craftsmanship. Every corner of this home has been carefully considered, from the seamless timber interior and hidden bathroom doors to the children’s room, peaceful parents’ retreat and brilliant indoor-outdoor living spaces. What makes this home so special is the way it proves that a dream home doesn’t need to be huge. With skill, creativity and a clear sense of what matters, Kellie and Jerrad have created a small family home that feels beautiful, grounded, deeply personal and full of heart. We hope you enjoy the tour of this truly spectacular small home!
