Ever wonder how a smell travels across a room? Explore the science of diffusion, random particle motion, and equilibrium in this 3D animation! - ⏳ Chapters: - 0:00 - Gas Particles & Random Motion - 0:35 - What is Equilibrium? - 0:52 - Introducing a High Concentration (Perfume) - 1:20 - The Process of Diffusion Explained - 1:55 - Reaching Equilibrium NGScienceX High school education series (ages 13+) Booklet 2 – Diffusion in Gases ngsciencex.com Imagine this container is filled with air — billions of tiny gas particles moving constantly in random directions. The particles are already evenly spread throughout the space. Notice how they never stop moving. Each particle travels in a straight line until it collides with another particle or the container wall, then bounces off in a new direction. This constant, random motion is a key feature of gases. Right now, the system is at equilibrium — the particles are evenly distributed, and while they're still moving, there's no overall change in how they're spread out. Let's pause the simulation for a moment. Now, imagine someone opens a bottle of perfume in the corner of the room. The orange particles represent scent molecules, tightly clustered together where they were released. Look at the difference. The scent particles are concentrated in one small area — a region of high concentration. The rest of the container has only air particles — regions of low concentration. What do you think will happen when the particles start moving again? Let's find out. Watch the orange particles carefully. They don't know where the other particles are. They don't deliberately move away from the crowded area. Each particle simply moves in a random direction until it collides with something, then bounces off another way. And yet, something remarkable is happening. The scent particles are gradually spreading out. Through nothing but random motion, the scent particles have now spread throughout the entire container. This process is called diffusion — the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Because more particles were randomly moving out of the crowded area than into it, they gradually spread out. Now equilibrium has been reached — the scent particles are evenly mixed with the air particles. This is why you can eventually smell perfume from across a room, even when the air seems perfectly still. Billions of particles spreading through random motion — that's diffusion. #Diffusion #Chemistry #Physics #ScienceAnimation #NGScienceX
