Update on Cohabitation Sessions of GENTARO & ANNIE | Young Silverback Gorilla Shows off Strength

Today, There has been an update from Ueno Zoo regarding the cohabitation training for Gentaro and Annie. ⇩ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As previously announced, we have been conducting cohabitation training for Gentaro and Annie only on days when the facility is closed. During the cohabitation session held in April 2026, Gentaro displayed a display behavior (a behavior intended to show off) toward Annie, then approached her from behind and gently nipped her back. Although there was some physical contact, the session concluded without any injuries. Outside of these introductions, we have continued to manage their environment so that they can see each other through the bars as much as possible, just as we have done previously, and we have made sure to maximize their viewing time together. However, during the introductions, both remained tense, and their relationship continued to show no progress. We believed one reason they weren’t getting closer was the long intervals between cohabitation sessions, so we decided to conduct them daily. Prioritizing consecutive cohabitation sessions, we are currently holding them for short periods before the park opens. We began these daily cohabitation sessions on May 11. Both gorillas have improved in how they maintain distance from each other compared to before, and they seem to understand our intention to keep the sessions brief. On the 13th, there was a brief physical contact, and Annie sustained an injury. However, after consulting with the veterinarian, we decided to prioritize continuing the consecutive cohabitation sessions and have been proceeding as planned. As we continue these daily sessions, we will carefully monitor the condition and relationship between the two gorillas. Sunny. Gentaro, the male gorilla, had been displaying courtship behavior since early morning. After running around, Gentaro relaxed and took a nap. In the neighboring Haoko group, it was cute to see Komomo, the female gorilla, poking her sister Sumomo from behind with her finger to startle her. Annie would eat her food in the outdoor area and then immediately return indoors, but she seemed to be in good spirits.
