Built in the early 1960s for the Western Region, these compact diesel-hydraulics marked a bold break from steam… and a dramatic step away from national standardisation. With their German-inspired design and hydraulic transmission, Hymeks worked passenger and freight trains across the West of England and South Wales. Crews loved them. They were powerful, reliable — and they sounded fantastic. But politics and changing railway policy cut their careers short. From Bristol Bath Road to Old Oak Common, the Hymeks burned bright… and disappeared far too soon.
