描けなかった2枚の絵　―原爆が投下された日の記憶―

放送日 2008/8/6　　Aired on August 6, 2008 Hiroshima Peace Program TSS ARCHIVE PROJECT https://www.tss-tv.co.jp/web/archive_project/english.html Miyoko Matsubara (age 75 at the time) experienced the atomic bombing at 12 years old in Tsurumi-cho, Hiroshima City, located one kilometer from the hypocenter. In 1962, 29-year-old Miyoko was chosen to represent Hiroshima on Barbara Reynolds’ Peace Pilgrimage. Together, they visited 14 countries around the world, speaking out against nuclear testing. This was the beginning of Miyoko’s peace activism. She began studying English in order to convey what happened during the bombing in her own words, becoming one of the few hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) who could give her testimony in English to international visitors. When giving her testimony, Miyoko uses thirteen illustrations which depict that fateful day that she drew herself. However, there were two memories that she couldn’t bring herself to put to paper. To help depict these memories on canvas, two high schoolers in Hiroshima picked up their brushes. Their names were Yuki Togo and Miwa Matsubara, second-year students at Hiroshima Municipal Moto-machi Senior High School. They listened to Miyoko’s story, walked the area where she experienced the bombing, and sought to understand what happened that day.
