The Secret Ritual of a Rusa Stag | Australia's Wild Deer Rut

Most people never witness what happens during the annual rut of a wild rusa stag. For most of the year, feral Javan rusa deer live relatively peaceful lives. But during the breeding season everything changes. Mature stags begin searching for does, challenging rivals, and preparing themselves for battles that can decide who passes on their genes. Serious injuries—and sometimes death—can result from these fierce contests. One of the most fascinating parts of this ritual is the mud wallow. Stags urinate into the mud, roll in it, thrash nearby grasses and shrubs, and decorate their antlers and bodies with mud and vegetation. The powerful scent and striking appearance help advertise their strength, intimidate rival stags, and prepare them for the intense weeks ahead. This trail camera overlooking a well-used wallow in south-east Queensland captured our first large rusa stag stopping to investigate who had visited before him, before refreshing his scent and appearance for another night of searching for rivals and breeding opportunities. Hidden away in the Australian bush, this ancient ceremony has been taking place long before any camera was there to witness it.
