The memory of the shrine mikoshi was lost in the flames of the Great Tokyo Air Raid in 1945. After a long silence, and at the milestone of the shrine’s 745th anniversary, a new Honsha Mikoshi was reborn. With a base over four shaku, golden craftsmanship, deep purple ropes, and the sacred “Mi” crest of Mishima, its presence was overwhelming. The moment I saw it, I felt not only beauty, but the weight of history, prayer, and the soul of the town. The ujiko of Negishi and Higashi-Nippori placed their shoulders beneath it, carrying the memory of Shitamachi back into the streets. This was not only the birth of a new mikoshi. It was the revival of a lost history. I was there with my camera. I witnessed the moment a new legend of Motomishima began.
