The Sound of the Old Days at King’s Cross – Deltics Roaring Out of London
Step back in time to the golden age of British diesel power and experience the unforgettable sound of the mighty Deltics at King’s Cross.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the legendary British Rail Class 55 “Deltic” locomotives dominated the East Coast Main Line, hauling the most prestigious express trains between London King’s Cross, York, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. Built by English Electric in 1961–1962, only 22 of these remarkable locomotives were ever produced, but they quickly became icons of British railway history.
Powered by two Napier Deltic engines producing a combined 3,300 horsepower, these machines were among the most powerful diesel locomotives in the world at the time. Their distinctive high-pitched roar and deep mechanical growl became synonymous with departures from King’s Cross as they accelerated northwards with famous expresses like the Flying Scotsman.
For railway enthusiasts, the sound of a Deltic leaving the platforms — engines screaming as the train disappears through Gasworks Tunnel — represents one of the most evocative memories of Britain’s railway past.
Although their careers were relatively short, lasting roughly two decades before being replaced by the InterCity 125 high-speed trains, the Deltics built a legendary reputation for speed, power, and personality. Today several survive in preservation, keeping that incredible sound alive for new generations of railway fans.
In this video we revisit those unforgettable moments — the echoing roar, the platform atmosphere, and the pure mechanical music of the Deltic era at King’s Cross.
