Description
Morning all,
While the nation sits waiting for the local election results, I thought I’d pause to wish a very Happy 100th Birthday to Britain’s supreme National Treasure, Sir David Attenborough.
One hundred years. Which, when you think about it, is an astonishingly long time to spend wandering about in jungles being peered at suspiciously by reptiles. In that century, Sir David has somehow managed to educate much of the planet about wildlife, ecosystems, climate, conservation, and the deeply unsettling habits of creatures living three miles beneath the Pacific.
He has done this with such calm authority that entire generations now instinctively lower their voices whenever they hear the phrase, “And here… we see…”
Even my own Manservant has described Sir David as “a true national treasure.” Though, rather glaringly, he has yet to apply the same title to me. I am choosing to regard this as an administrative oversight rather than a catastrophic lapse in judgment.
Sir David’s birthday is to be celebrated with a grand event at Royal Albert Hall, featuring music from his programmes, reflections from distinguished public figures, and tributes from leading champions of the natural world — all entirely fitting for a man who has spent a century reminding humanity that the planet is both miraculous and, in many cases, alarmingly slimy.
Many happy returns, Sir David. Britain simply wouldn’t sound the same without you.
