Those that can’t afford delays bid for priority slots in high-stakes auctions, where passage has reached a record $4 million, forty times the usual price. Beyond commerce, Panama is also a perilous corridor for migration. In 2023, over half a million people crossed the Darién Gap, a dense and dangerous jungle linking South America to the north.
