Today, X-Sector is home to The Smiler, Oblivion, the Smiler Shop, and food outlets including Just Chicken. Oblivion transformed the theme park industry when it opened in 1998 as the world's first dive coaster, sending riders vertically into a dark underground tunnel. Fifteen years later, The Smiler reshaped the area with its Ministry of Joy storyline and world record 14 inversions, becoming one of the most recognisable rollercoasters at Alton Towers. The nearby Smiler Shop continues the theme with ride merchandise, clothing, souvenirs, and collectables inspired by the Ministry of Joy. X-Sector has changed significantly over the years. Before The Smiler arrived, the area was home to attractions including The Black Hole, Submission, and Enterprise, while the former Enterprise site later became home to Twistatron as part of the Retro Squad. Although the rides have changed, X-Sector has continued to evolve while retaining its futuristic identity centred around experimental technology and psychological testing. Alton Towers Resort is the UK's largest theme park resort, combining major rollercoasters, family attractions, themed accommodation, and unique experiences across more than 800 acres of Staffordshire countryside. Beyond X-Sector, guests can explore Forbidden Valley, Dark Forest, Mutiny Bay, Katanga Canyon, Gloomy Wood, the World of David Walliams, and CBeebies Land, where Bluey the Ride: Here Comes the Grannies has joined the family attraction line-up.
