In January 1945, an American officer stepped into the twin Belgian villages of Krinkelt-Rocherath and encountered a scene of absolute devastation. Scattered throughout the frozen streets were more than fifty mangled tanks and vehicles, left exactly where the fighting had ceased. He didn’t just take notes; he meticulously mapped every single wreck. Working alongside him was a photographer who captured images that, eight decades later, allow us to reconstruct this battlefield with haunting precision. It leads to a compelling mystery: how did an SS armoured force come to end up shattered in these narrow streets by a far smaller group of American infantry?
