In January 1945, an American officer stepped into the twin Belgian villages of Krinkelt-Rocherath and encountered a scene of absolute devastation. Scattered throughout the frozen streets were more than fifty mangled tanks and vehicles, left exactly where the fighting had ceased. He didn’t just take notes; he meticulously mapped every single wreck. Working alongside him was a photographer who captured images that, eight decades later, allow us to reconstruct this battlefield with haunting precision. It leads to a compelling mystery: how did an SS armoured force come to end up shattered in these narrow streets by a far smaller group of American infantry? Today, we are returning to those same roads to pinpoint exactly where those photographs were taken, uncover the details of their destruction and explore how the twin villages came to be known as the "Panther Graveyard."
