We Finally Found the Big Rusa Stag… But Did You Spot the Owl?

There are moments in nature that are exciting not because they are dramatic, but because they feel like a small piece of a much bigger story. For the past few weeks we've been hoping to capture a mature rusa stag on the trail camera hidden in the bushland of south-east Queensland. When we walked in to collect it, the signs were everywhere: freshly thrashed rub trees, disturbed leaf litter, and the feeling that a big stag was moving through the area as the July rut approaches. Then, among just a few nights of footage, there he was. It's only a brief glimpse as he disappears down the trail, but this is exactly the kind of encounter that keeps us coming back. If you look closely, you'll even notice a silent observer perched above the track—an owl or perhaps a tawny frogmouth—watching the stag pass beneath without either animal knowing that a trail camera is quietly recording the moment. One small video. One wild stag. One mysterious bird in the darkness. For us, this isn't just another clip. It's another step in an ongoing quest to better understand and appreciate a remarkable population of wild rusa deer living quietly in the bush, largely unnoticed by the thousands of people nearby.
