Canada divided: Elites at galas, needy turned away from food banks

The imagery of the last 48 hours perfectly encapsulates this divide. In Hamilton, Prime Minister Mark Carney was seen rubbing shoulders with music royalty at the Juno Awards, where legendary songwriter Joni Mitchell accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award and publicly anointed Carney a "blessing" for the country.However, miles away from the orange carpet, the reality for average Canadians is increasingly desperate. As of April 1st, major food banks, including the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank, have been forced to implement a one-visit-per-month limit, down from the previous two. With shelving units sitting bare and a 150% increase in visits over the last four years, the charitable sector warns that "donations can no longer keep pace with the systemic failure of the economy."
