Description

It's likely that you, like I have, come across a time when a U-bolt type clamp would have been really useful for a project of repair. Attaching items to round pipes is not an easy task, especially when you can't weld to the pipe & the mount needs to be strong too. U-bolts are also used to clamp leaf springs, the suspension used on many older cars, pickup trucks & 4x4s & sometimes these are just no longer available from the suppliers,. I had exacltly this csse recently where the bull bars on a Side by Side had broken all but two of their original mounts allowing the bars to rattle & move around whilst driving & let's face it, not able to do what they were supposed to do anymore. The chassis of the vehicle close to the bars was round in section & also formed part of the approved roll cage so welding just wasn't an option in this case. I had a rummage around my steel stock & found some round bar so thought this would be a perfect oportunity to use U-bolts as a clamp to then mount the new supports to the bullbar. the U-bolts neeed to be of a specific size & once I had worked out, what I thought to be a relatively simple way of making them I set too & gave it a go. In the video you see the design, key mesurements & the process of making these clamps using only basic workshop tools. I was very pleased with the result & the clamps did the job pefectly, they didn't just look neat & tidy but they were super strong too & easy to install. I'km sure this video will be very helpful to many especially given U-bolts are much less common on vehicles these days.
