How a Hybrid Car Works! Power Electronics: Inverter and Converter Assembly

Here's a look inside the power electronics inside the Toyota and Lexus hybrid system and how it works! The inverter assembly consists of a power inverter, which receives 288 VDC from the hybrid battery. Using a reactor, it bumps it up to a few hundred volts. This allows the motors to run more efficiently. The insulated gate bipolar transistors convert the high voltage to 3-phase alternating current, where it powers three electric motors, MG1 and MG2 inside the front transaxle, and MGR in the rear transaxle for AWD models. Under regenerative braking, diodes rectify the alternating current, while capacitors smoothen it out, converting the power back to high voltage DC where it can charge the high voltage battery. A DC to DC converter is used to charge the 12v battery, while an onboard inverter powers the AC compressor. This system has been around for over 20 years and proven itself reliable. It has been adopted by many other OEM's and is similar to the principles used in EV's. The inverter in this video is from a 2006 Lexus RX400H with over 411,000km on it.
