But you can't always rely on the file extension. File extensions aren't necessarily unique and the more generic ones might use any number of formats behind the scenes. Even files associated with specific apps, like docx for MS Word, are secretly just Zip files! But there's a tool called TrID which has patterns and definitions for identifying nearly 20,000 filetypes and adding more all the time.
