Description

Here's a COMPLETE teardown of a failed Toyota 2GR-FKS engine from a Tacoma that was suffering from MASSIVE oil consumption. I'm pulling the valve train, heads, timing set, oil pans and pistons out just to see exactly why this 3.5L V6 failed at 369,000km. The deeply scored cylinder walls we found are some of the worst I’ve ever seen on a modern Toyota, which begs the question, where has TOYOTA QUALITY gone? The Toyota 2GR-FKS is known for its D-4S dual injection system and Atkinson cycle efficiency, which drastically reduces carbon buildup compared to its GDI only counterparts. While oil burning is becoming more common on 3rd generation Tacoma trucks that use this updated 3.5L engine, the question at hand is why did the engine score the cylinder and piston skirts so badly? Was it a low-tension piston ring failure? Did carbon buildup lead to the deep vertical scratches on the cylinder bores? Or was it an oiling issue that led to this catastrophic engine failure? This engine clearly was well maintained with regular oil changes as it was very clean on the inside. I attempt at speculating causes, but if you've got any ideas to add, please drop a comment down below! If you own a Toyota Tacoma (2016+), Lexus GS 350, RX 350, IS 350, RC 350, ES 350, LS 350, LM 350, or Toyota Highlander, Camry, Avalon or Sienna, this teardown is a must-watch to understand the internal health of the 3.5L V6 powertrain and learn how it works. The 2GR-FKS model was updated from the 2GR-FE engine to feature a new VVT system using valves integrated inside the gears themselves. It has new oiling paths and an altered cooling system (more plastics!), in addition to D4S injection.
