Description
Apparently, British pubs are now allowed to stay open until 5 a.m. on Monday for the England v Mexico match.
My Manservant had previously declared there would be no further relaxing of licensing laws beyond what was already planned for the World Cup. But then, consistency has never been this Government's favourite hobby. Another U-turn seems to have been dusted off, polished up, and put back into service.
So, Keir today, gone tomorrow (well... perhaps by 14 July), has hurried through emergency legislation to keep the nation's pubs open into the small hours.
Personally, I'm rather relieved I don't live next door to a boozer—as we affectionately call pubs here in Britain. Judging by previous footballing occasions, I imagine sleep will become an entirely optional pastime for anyone within a three-mile radius.
Ordinarily, a landlord wanting to stay open late has to ask the local council nicely at least five working days in advance. Yet, when the occasion demands, entire laws can apparently be whisked aside with surprising speed. It does make one wonder, doesn't it, just how immovable these immovable rules really are.
My favourite part of the Government announcement, however, was the helpful advice that employers should set "clear expectations" for the workday on Monday.
A sensible suggestion.
Here are mine.
I shall be sleeping until at least lunchtime, declining all meetings, demanding several additional cans of tuna, and expecting uninterrupted service throughout. National morale, after all, depends on someone maintaining standards.
