It’s race day at the Hungaroring Grand Prix.
In challenging wet conditions, Marcus Ericsson, exits turn four and loses control of his Caterham F1 car. The car slides one way, and then the other - before spearing into the barrier at high speed.
While the driver is ok, the car is not. Three wheels are torn off, and the final one barely hangs on. Both the front and rear wings have snapped off.
But it gets worse. The “tub”, the core of an F1 car, and the most expensive part, was also heavily damaged.
After the race, the broken car went back to the factory, and because the tub was totally destroyed, it was just abandoned in the corner of the workshop.
This was another disaster for Caterham F1... At the time, they were in serious financial trouble. In fact, they were so low on funds they didn’t have enough to go racing, and missed two of the remaining races that season.
By October of 2014, Caterham had run out of money. They’d gone bankrupt, been put into administration, and debt collectors were seizing equipment from the factory - including that destroyed, forgotten tub.
And that’s where our story begins. But who would look at that wreck… and see a working Formula One car?
