Modern systems have eight gears and take just ten milliseconds to change between them - for reference, the blink of an eye is 300 milliseconds. But the latest F1 gearboxes do something that should be mechanically impossible. For a tiny window - around three milliseconds, two gears are engaged at the same time… which means the gearbox SHOULD lock solid - and then destroy itself. But if you time it perfectly, within those three milliseconds, the new gear takes over before the old one lets go. And so, the power never stops. And with up to 3,200 gearshifts during an F1 race, that adds up to more than 10 seconds over a Grand Prix… But forty years ago, changing gear in a Formula One car was so brutal that by the end of a race, drivers' hands were bleeding.
