In late 1916, as the Battle of the Somme ground on into its coldest and muddiest phase, combat cameramen captured rare, unfiltered footage from the front lines. British troops eating rations beside gun positions, moving through zig-zag trenches, and preparing to go over the top under a rolling barrage. In this video, military historian Dan Hill reacts to this original silent-film reel from the U.S. National Archives, breaking down the details hidden in plain sight: the kit and uniforms that date the scenes, the first-generation tanks seen in action, Scottish units advancing across No Man’s Land, and the grim aftermath as wounded men and German prisoners are escorted back through the communications trenches.
