Description

Can Cadillac's AWD stand up to Audi's Quattro or Mercedes 4Matic AWD? In today's teardown, I'll be cutting apart a Cadillac CTS AWD transfer case to see the internal mechanics, the clutch pack engagement, front to rear torque distribution and exactly what goes wrong when these units start making noise or shuddering. The transfer case in this video was from a 2016 Cadillac CTS 3.6 V6 with 140,000km on it. It was paired with the GM's infamous ZF 8HP 8 speed 8L45 transmission, of which you can view the teardown video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkrDb50N8e0 Here's a teardown on other AWD systems and how they stack up: Infiniti ATTESA E-TS AWD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7olarizFqkA Lexus AWD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfuXMxS9L68 Toyota / Lexus Hybrid e-AWD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhZ8Uoduq3o BMW X-drive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgOuY1mqzZU Mercedes 4MATIC AWD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8pWoHK6G5c Acura SH-AWD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTJXwnMozn8 Audi Quattro AWD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlWopZRzkvA Subaru Symmetrical AWD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSA_qiJ5wl4 Jeep 4WD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG5pv4bAKeQ Key points discussed in this video: Full disassembly of the Cadillac CTS AWD BorgWarner transfer case. Breakdown of the internal electromagnet, ball ramp system and primary clutch pack. How the secondary clutch packs allow wheel speed differences between the front and rear, and how torque is distributed when its applied. Common symptoms of a failing transfer case (shuddering, clicking, or fluid leaks). On this vehicle, shuddering is likely the fault of the torque converter, but otherwise the transfer case is pretty solid. Internal component wear: Hint: these clutches don't like when you do burnouts!
