Across twenty-nine ujiko neighborhoods, the massive honsha senkan mikoshi travels through the streets for an entire day, carried by the roaring spirit of downtown Tokyo. Founded in Tenpyō 2 (730 AD), 下谷神社 originally stood near present-day Ueno Park before being relocated to its current location in 1931. The nearby district “Inarichō” also takes its name from the shrine’s former title: Shitaya Inari. Unlike many shrines in central Tokyo, the shrine buildings survived the war, preserving the powerful atmosphere of old Edo shitamachi. The enormous honsha senkan mikoshi measures over 3 meters in height and is carried across all 29 parish neighborhoods by nearly 6,000 energetic bearers. Its overwhelming presence is often compared alongside the legendary senkan mikoshi of Torigoe Shrine. From the dramatic early morning miyadashi, the mikoshi is passed from town to town, shoulder to shoulder, as if the soul of Edo itself were moving through the streets. Wild. Violent. Sacred. The roof bears silver rice-ear crests, while the warabite corners carry rotating Yatagarasu birds dedicated to Yamato Takeru. Built in Taishō 15 (1926), the sacred crow ornaments spin together with the violent movement of the mikoshi, creating a breathtaking sight filled with raw spiritual energy.
