Description
🌿🦍 *Watch how a dominant Silverback manages his troop during intense environmental changes. Why was Oumbi more unsettled by the sight of the machinery than the loud alarms? This premiere provides a fascinating look at gorilla vigilance and sensory priorities.*
Silverback gorilla Oumbi is back in protective mode as the heavy building work continues for the new Orangutan and educational centre right opposite the gorilla enclosure. In this observational premiere special, I watched Oumbi outside for roughly three hours as he navigated the constant noise of the building site.
The environment was far from quiet; the background sounds escalated from drilling to loud alarms and heavy machinery. While I have reduced the volume for your comfort, I left enough in so you can hear the severe sounds the gorillas are experiencing. Interestingly, the loud alarms didn't seem to disturb Oumbi as much as you might expect. Instead of being stressed, he was intensely curious, focusing his attention on the specific sounds of a nearby digger.
Throughout the day, Shufai kept poking his hand out to hold the door flap, earning quick, sharp glances from Oumbi. Shufai eventually began moving between the doors, while Ozala cautiously checked the situation through the window before braving a peek outside. To finish the day, the group settled inside for food time, enjoying their lucerne—a high-protein, drought-tolerant perennial legume—along with their food pellets, all while keeping an eye on the chimpanzees through the small window.

Due to background noise from human activity, the original audio has been mixed with natural bird songs for a more peaceful viewing experience. Where possible, I will keep the natural sound intact.
