Description

Gloucester Horton Road 85B – The Lost GWR Steam Depot Gloucester Horton Road (85B) was once one of the Great Western Railway’s most important steam depots, serving the busy routes through Gloucestershire for decades. With its large 10-road shed, sidings, turntable and coaling facilities, the depot handled a huge variety of GWR locomotives, from hardworking pannier tanks and 1400 auto-train engines to the mighty Castles and Halls. At its peak, 85B housed over 100 locomotives, making it a vital operational hub for the region. Even into the early 1960s, as steam was declining, Horton Road remained a bustling centre of railway activity, with around 70 engines still on its books. In this video, we explore the history and atmosphere of Gloucester Horton Road, its allocation of locomotives, the work carried out there, and the depot’s final years before closure. Though nothing remains of the site today, the legacy of 85B lives on in photographs, memories, and the preserved engines that once called it home.
