Formula 1 cars are the fastest machines on the planet, not in a straight line, but when slowing down and going around corners.
They produce more than 4000 kilos of downforce - meaning they can go through corners like this. [video of F1 flashing through frame, running wide]
Well, almost. And they can do this because of one thing… aerodynamics.
Using intricate, detailed and sometimes organic shapes, engineers figure out how to use the air to suck the car into the ground, giving it more grip.
It makes F1 awe-inspiring to watch, but there’s a downside - it’s also caused some of the biggest crashes in our sport, and it’s often made racing boring.
In this video, I want to uncover the origins of aerodynamics, the incredible evolution they've undergone, and how Formula 1 cars are now the most complex aerodynamic machines on Earth.
