November 2024, in Abu Dhabi. Eleven cars head out on the Yas Marina Circuit for one of the most unusual races ever.
The event had been massively hyped up, but things didn't go to plan.
The cars didn't look that fast, the racing lines weren't very good, and there were a number of crashes. It almost looked like no one was driving the cars - and that's because there wasn't.
This was the A2RL race, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, where the cars drive themselves and they're programmed by engineers.
Now, whether or not you think a human should be behind the wheel of a racing car, the engineering and technology behind these machines is fascinating. And that's really what this is about - not replacing drivers, but pushing the limits of engineering.
A few weeks ago, I went to watch them test, a month before the race, and they're quick. This year, the cars look fast.
