Description

Downing Street, for those who have never had the privilege of padding its pavements, is not really a street at all. It's more of a highly exclusive cul-de-sac concealed behind a set of imposing black gates and guarded with a level of enthusiasm usually reserved for crown jewels and the last biscuit in the tin. It is, in essence, a very civilised fortress. Nobody simply "pops round." At long last, summer has wandered into Britain, looking faintly surprised to find itself here. The sunshine has been putting in a rare appearance, transforming London into a place where perfectly sensible people suddenly feel compelled to sit outdoors, eat rapidly melting ice creams, and gaze thoughtfully at clouds as though they might reveal the meaning of life. I've spent part of these warmer days leafing through old photographs of Number 10, marvelling at the parade of prime ministers who have marched through these rooms over the centuries. One can't help wondering how many of them paced these same creaking floorboards in uncomfortable shoes, rehearsing speeches, wrestling with impossible decisions, or simply trying to remember where they left their spectacles. The place contains enough history to keep several museums busy. There are hidden passages, draughty staircases, and fireplaces that have witnessed events capable of filling entire libraries. Winston Churchill once sat before one of them, making decisions that would shape the course of the twentieth century. These days, the same rooms are more likely to witness me contemplating the strategic deployment of a second breakfast. It is an odd thing, living in a house where every corridor seems to lead into another chapter of British history. One moment you're strolling past portraits of statesmen; the next you're enjoying kippers in a kitchen where Margaret Thatcher may well have stood decades earlier, deciding that enough was enough for the day. History, I've concluded, isn't always something that happened long ago. Sometimes it is simply yesterday's news preserved in oak panelling and polished brass. And occasionally, if you're particularly fortunate and possess four paws and excellent whiskers, you find yourself living in the middle of it. Keep calm and Larry on. #cats #larrythecat #animals #history #pets
