Description
The De Havilland Mosquito, nicknamed the wooden wonder, was an extremely versatile aircraft being used in a wide variety of roles throughout World War Two. In particular, its speed made it ideal for launching low level precision strikes on high value targets. Perhaps the highest profile of these low-level precision strikes was the strike on the Amiens prison on 18th of February 1944. Mosquitoes of 21 Squadron RAF, 464 Squadron RAAF and 487 Squadron of RNZAF, where tasked with hitting the prison and freeing French resistance members being held there. The raid was considered successful with the Mosquitoes breaching the walls and allowing between 255 and 258 prisoners to escape, among them 50 members of the French Resistance. While majority we recaptured the raid diverted the Germans attention particularly in the lead up to the Normandy landings and importantly those that did escape were able to identify a number of key undercover Gestapo agents.
