In the mid 1950s, British production company, Associated British Pictures Corporation set out to recreate one of the most daring air raids of the Second World War — Operation Chastise, also known as the Dambusters Raid! The film the Dambusters tells the story of the famous World War Two bomber raid by RAF bomber command against the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams in May 1943. In many respects the movie has two distinct parts; the first focusing on Barnes Wallis and the development of his revolutionary bouncing bomb, the bomb which made the attack possible and the second 617 Squadron and how they carried out the raid on the dams. Released in May 1955, the film was a massive success, and in the decades since has become a classic British war film. The flying sequence are superb, the acting first class, and importantly it portrays the raid and associated events well, for the most part keeping true to history. In this episode of The Antique Airshow - Planes on the Big Screen, we take a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Dam Busters, the film that brought Operation Chastise to life for a post-war audience. This video will delve into the real history behind the film, explaining how the daring, low level raid was undertaken, before exploring how Associated British was able to successfully recreate it for the big screen.
