Nose back to the grindstone this week, after all the noise surrounding Monday morning's football. First things first: London has once again entered its annual "What a scorcher!" phase. Humans, for reasons known only to themselves, insist on calling this "lovely weather" while simultaneously melting onto pavements and complaining that the Tube resembles a slow-cooked casserole. I'll be remaining indoors, where civilisation belongs. I've already instructed the chef that all meals are to be served in a bowl perched over ice cubes. Hydration breaks have also been scheduled at regular intervals. Meanwhile, first thing this morning, my manservant departed on what is expected to be his final overseas trip as Prime Minister. He's off to the NATO gathering in Turkey with all the authority of someone who's already handed in their notice but still has to attend the team meeting. Empty-handed, short on influence, and largely there to occupy a chair. One suspects his principal diplomatic objective will be avoiding the awkward moment when everyone else wanders into the important meeting while he's left studying the refreshments table. Just as I was preparing to embark on a perfectly respectable afternoon siesta, politics intervened, as it so often does. The MP for Clacton has decided to resign. Nigel Farage has announced he'll step down as MP only to contest a by-election in the very same constituency, insisting he's "done nothing wrong" in accepting gifts and benefits from wealthy backers. It's the sort of plot twist that would have been rejected by sitcom writers for being just a little too implausible. Still, this is British politics. If it ever starts making complete sense, that's probably when we should all begin to worry. Keep calm and Larry on.
