Honda's Most Efficient Engine? HYBRID 1.3L LDA-MF5 Teardown!

Here's a look inside of the Honda IMA hybrid system and how it works! In this video we focus on the teardown of the 1.3L LDA-MF5 Honda engine, apart from its integrated motor assist electric motor. In future videos we will teardown the IMA motor, power electronics, continously variable transmission and learn about Honda's hybrid system. Largely based on the L-series engine, the Honda 1.3L LDA-MF5 is unique in its head design. It uses 2 valves per cylinder instead of 4, eight spark plugs and ignition coils instead of 4, and has a 3 stage cylinder management system. Being a mild, parallel hybrid, the IMA motor is attached to the crankshaft, and thus the engine has to shut off its valves to minimize pumping loses. It does this by using a zero-lift cam profile, closing the valve, allowing no lift, while the engine is in idle stop and electric only mode alone. This engine is tied to a traditional continuously variable transmission. The power electronics reside behind the rear seat, including the NiMh battery, inverter, DC to DC converter, A/C Driver, and battery control module.
