There are few occasions in Britain where otherwise sensible adults will voluntarily balance a small architectural project on their heads and then spend eight hours pretending this is perfectly normal. Ladies' Day at Ascot is one of them. The hats alone represented an astonishing triumph of engineering. Some appeared to have their own weather systems. The remarkable thing about Ascot is that it manages to combine two activities that have almost nothing to do with one another. The official purpose is horse racing, yet for much of the day, the horses seem merely incidental, like background musicians at a particularly elaborate garden party. You could spend hours there and remain uncertain whether any racing had occurred at all. What is fascinating about this British sporting event is the optimism. Here were thousands of people confidently placing bets despite overwhelming historical evidence that they were not especially good at predicting horse races. The great parade of fashion continued throughout the afternoon. And yet, amid all the extravagance, there was something oddly endearing about the whole enterprise. Ascot is Britain in miniature: excessively complicated, slightly bewildering, faintly ridiculous, and somehow magnificent at the same time. It is a place where people willingly spend months planning an outfit for an event ostensibly centred on animals that will be visible for approximately ninety seconds. It is a celebration of style, optimism, and improbable confidence in the face of overwhelming uncertainty.
