Only a small fraction — just 17 percent — have ever reached what scientists describe as “good ecological status.” Across the country, these rivers are too often treated not as living habitats, but as resources to be consumed. Their waters are diverted to supply expanding housing developments. Pollution from towns, farms, and sewage seeps steadily into their fragile ecosystems, clouding waters that once ran crystal clear.
Their protection depends largely upon local planning policies — protections that can differ dramatically from one council to the next. And now, as pressure mounts to approve ever more housing in pursuit of national targets, these ancient waterways face increasing strain.
For creatures that have evolved here over millennia, and for landscapes shaped by water long before human memory, the consequences may prove profound.
