The RB21 is what you'd call a peaky car. It has an incredibly narrow setup window - it needs to run really low to the ground to generate maximum downforce from the floor. And when that ride height needs to be lifted up, the car just falls out of its ideal window. Now, Interlagos is bumpy and undulating. The track surface forces you to run higher ride heights just to survive - otherwise you're bottoming out constantly, and the floor's aerodynamic platform becomes completely unstable. So in practice, Verstappen was struggling with exactly that. Bouncing, vibrations, no grip. And after the sprint qualifying session, his feedback to the team was pretty blunt - he said the car felt completely broken. And as a driver, when the car feels broken, you've got no confidence. You can't commit to corners because you don't know if the grip's going to be there or if the car's going to suddenly let go. After P4 in the sprint race - 4.4 seconds off the pace - Red Bull knew they had to take a risk.
